My one day workshops are designed to give your spinning a kick start and cover a wide range of topics as you can see below.

I started teaching back in the 1980's at Berkshire College of Agriculture, running evening classes there for 5 years for beginners and then following on with advanced classes, I have youtube tutorials too as well as some videos for sale.

I have been teaching these workshops here in South West Scotland in my dedicated studio since 2008.  I have students come from all over the world and have a range of wheels for you to try to get a feel for what is right for you if you plan to buy one.

My teaching has taken me all over the Uk teaching many guilds and also to Australia and New Zealand teaching for Majacaft (one of the best known quality wheel makers).

Workshops available

The following workshops are available either at your own Guild premises or at my studio in Dumfries and Galloway near to Kirkcudbright.  All workshops at my studio are 6 hours duration.

1) Fleece selection:- what kind of fleece to look for, how to grade it and what kind of project it is suited to. Washing the fleece ready for preparation by either combing or carding.

2) Preparation techniques:- the use of combs for a worsted preparation for smooth yarns, often used for weaving but also very suited to knitting.  Using hand carders, blending boards and drum carders for woolen preparation suited for semi woolen or long draw techiques.

3) Beginner Spinning:- From how the wheel works, trying different types of wheel, getting to grips with tension and treadling this workshop is for the person who has never done it before or struggles to understand the basics. A great introduction.

4) Spinning Worsted:- How to get the best results from a combed preparation, using hand combed and commercially prepared tops.

5) Spinning Longdraw: from how to make the best rolags to controlling the drafting, this technique is designed to produce lofty lightweight woolen yarn suited to warm and cosy knitwear.

6) Plying:- Getting the balance right for your spun yarn is often a neglected part of producing a useable yarn, here we will look at a basic 2 ply, then 3 ply and chain plying. Centre pull ball plying and art yarn plying. This will teach you all to know about how to achieve the best results from your handspun singles.

Exceptional Yarn Crafting

Learn to create unique, high-quality yarns using specialised techniques in dyeing and preparation, trusting the experience of a seasoned handspinner.

Quality Materials

There is a fibre suitable for every application, what we might use for weaving might be different than what we would choose for knitting, and even from one project to another. I Utilise fine crimpy wools and hand-dyed fibres of many different breeds in workshops to create exceptional pieces that stand the test of time.

I always felt a strong draw towards the soft luxury fibres such as Cashmere, Silk, Camel and Alpaca it became my mission to introduce the concept that hand spun didn't have to be "brown lumpy hippy stuff".  Being able to spin these often short and slippery fibres into beautiful soft yarns that can be worn next to the skin is what floats my boat.
